Yes, to the subject networks. We've run them as cohorts and they are immensely enriching for all involved. Yet I worry that more and more teachers lack both disciplinary subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge when entering the field to begin with. This is based on my experience, particularly with secondary science, and I wonder what others have seen. Required in-field course hours used for certification purposes are based on course codes. Studied content may not be part of the teacher's curriculum (ever). And I worry that ed. school treatment of pedagogical content knowledge is absent altogether. There are curriculum design classes but neither content nor ped. content knowledge is incorporated. Additionally, who teaches science teachers how to prepare for and run laboratory experiments with a class of teens? We are doing this work in schools with teachers who tell us neither were part of their cert. programs. Australia, UK, Canada requirements are different, yes?
